Serie A offered us a shock at the top of the table this Saturday evening. Lazio (4th) hosted Atalanta (2nd) at the Olimpico Stadium as part of the 18th day. After Inter’s victory at Cagliari earlier in the day, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men had to win to regain first place in the standings. All without Mateo Retegui, top scorer in the championship (12), who was injured against Empoli last weekend.

In Rome, the Bermasques were surprised. Launched in depth, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru went to beat Marco Carnesecchi to give the advantage to the Laziali (27th, 1-0). If the Romans had long believed in victory, Marco Brescianini – four minutes after his entry – allowed Atalanta to equalize at the end of the match (88th, 1-1). The two teams finally parted with a parity score. With this draw, Atalanta takes 1st place in the standings from Inter. Next day, Lazio will face AS Roma in the Italian capital derby (January 5). Atalanta will go to Udinese (January 11), but will first meet in Saudi Arabia to face Inter in the final of the Italian Super Cup (January 2).
