Mythical lair of Real Madrid, the Santiago-Bernabéu stadium, inaugurated in 1947, will officially change its name to simply become the “Bernabéu”. A significant decision which has already sparked numerous reactions among fans and members of society.

A marketing and historical choice

According to Marcathis modification is part of a commercial strategy of the Madrid management. Removing “Santiago” from the name would simplify the stadium’s identity while retaining a strong connection to the club’s heritage. This choice would also aim to prepare a possible naming contract. A common trend in modern football to maximize revenue.

The historic first name of Santiago Bernabéu, emblematic president of the club between 1943 and 1978 and initiator of the construction of the enclosure, therefore disappears from the official name, although the attachment to his heritage remains intact. This change comes after the complete renovation of the stadium (2019-2024), now equipped with the latest technologies.

A vote of socios expected

Before becoming official, this change must be validated by the socios, the decision-making assembly of the club’s supporters-shareholders. In the meantime, the first name “Santiago” has already disappeared from commercial media, particularly in merchandising offers, concerts and events organized at the stadium.
