The crisis is worsening at Manchester City. The English club is struggling to regain its level after a series of poor performances. The situation of Kevin De Bruyne, relegated to the bench during the last matches, fuels questions about his relationship with Pep Guardiola and his future at the club.
De Bruyne, a complicated return
Returning from injury in November, Kevin De Bruyne made his mark during his start against Nottingham Forest in early December. The Belgian had contributed to City’s only victory in their last 13 matches. However, after a series of disappointing collective performances, Guardiola opted to leave him on the bench against Aston Villa and Everton. A decision that caused quite a stir.
During the match against Everton, the Belgian midfielder only came on in the 75th minute and did not hide his dissatisfaction at the end of the match. According to talkSport consultant Danny Mills, “De Bruyne headed straight towards the tunnel, visibly upset, without interacting with Guardiola”. A scene which raises doubts about the understanding between the player and his coach.
Guardiola justifies his choices
At a press conference, Guardiola tried to calm speculation. “Kevin was not ready to play 90 minutes. I could have brought him in earlier, but the team was doing well at the time.”declared the Spanish technician. An explanation that is difficult to convince, especially since De Bruyne had made several starts in early December. The player’s contractual context, at the end of his lease next June, does not help the situation. Some see this as an additional reason to explain his recent management.
A collective and individual crisis
This discomfort comes as Manchester City is going through a difficult period. With a series of catastrophic results, including 9 defeats in the last 13 matches, the Citizens are 7th in the Premier League. Further complicating Guardiola’s task are the declining performances of key players like Erling Haaland, who missed a crucial penalty against Everton. While City absolutely need to get back on track, De Bruyne’s malaise could become a major problem if the situation does not improve quickly.
