Currently considered the best goalkeeper on the planet, Thibaut Courtois is, however, far from unanimous. In France, the popularity rating of the Belgian goalkeeper is not very high due to his strong temperament, with the famous “seum” which animated him after the semi-final of the 2018 World Cup won by the Blues (1- 0).
But it is not only in France that Courtois is singled out. On the other side of the Pyrenees, too, the Real Madrid goalkeeper has his detractors. And for good reason, he played in the past with the rival club in the Spanish capital, Atlético.
Total humiliation for Thibaut Courtois
The Spanish media thus seized upon a funny story concerning Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian international had the honor of having a plaque in his name in what is known as “the alley of legends”, in Madrid, near the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
This distinction rewards footballers who have played at least 100 matches with Atlético. But Courtois’ plaque was so vandalized by Colchoneros fans that the club is considering its removal. Transferred to Real in 2018, the Belgian has become persona non grata in the Atlético environment.
