Paris Saint-Germain are once again at the center of a controversy, and this time, the unfortunate Matvei Safonov is the target. The young Russian goalkeeper, recruited last summer, did not ask for anything, but he finds himself indirectly accused of blocking a potential transfer for reasons which go far beyond the sporting framework.
According to information from L’Equipe, PSG were close to signing Ukrainian defender Ilya Zabarnyi, a promising talent from Bournemouth. However, the club ultimately abandoned this operation due to the presence of Safonov in the squad, and geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine. A decision which immediately caused an outcry on social networks.
Safonov, victim of contested management
Parisian supporters were quick to express their anger, denouncing management deemed inconsistent and unfair. “It is not Safonov who is responsible for the situation in Ukraine,” claim some Internet users. Others are outraged to see the club refuse a transfer for political considerations, accusing PSG of mixing issues outside football.
For the former Krasnodar doorman, this situation adds to an already difficult context. Started by surprise against Bayern, a costly error caused him to lose his place to Donnarumma. Since then, the young Russian has struggled to find playing time and has seen his presence at the club become an involuntary problem.
An avoidable controversy?
This affair highlights management criticized by supporters and raises a broader question: should PSG really mix politics with sport? Safonov, an unwilling scapegoat, embodies the injustice of a choice which could cost the club dearly, both in sporting terms and in terms of image.
