Michel Denisot, former emblematic president of Paris Saint-Germain between 1991 and 1998, spoke about the drastic evolution of footballers’ salaries. In an interview with Raw, he revealed surprising details about players’ earnings in the ’90s, comparing them to today.
According to Denisot, the PSG stars of his time, like George Weah, received salaries which, in comparison, seem derisory today. “The highest salaries were the equivalent of 80,000 euros per month. Transfers? 5 or 6 million, no more”he explains. A sum which today corresponds to the income of a very good Ligue 2 player. He also underlines that money has profoundly transformed football, making it even more political than it already was.
Denisot: “true multinationals”
For Michel Denisot, the status of footballers has evolved well beyond the simple sporting framework. “The very big players have become multinationals. They have everything full time: lawyer, physiotherapist, masseur… A player is almost a club in himself”he said.
This observation highlights the growing responsibilities surrounding athletes, now at the center of complex networks involving marketing, law, and logistics.
