Central defender Tomas Araújo, announced in the sights of PSG in recent months, has officially extended his contract with Benfica until 2029. A decision which confirms his status as an indisputable starter this season, but which still leaves doubts as to his long-term future.
A strategic extension with an unchanged clause
At 22, Tomas Araújo has established himself as a pillar of the Portuguese club’s defense, even passing Antonio Silva in the hierarchy. If Benfica wanted to increase its release clause to 100 million euros, it will ultimately remain set at 80 million euros. This decision leaves courtiers, notably Paris Saint-Germain, with an open door for the summer transfer window.
Courted last summer by PSG, who anticipated a potential departure of Milan Skriniar, Araújo remains a prime target for the club from the French capital. In addition, several Premier League clubs remain attentive to the situation of the young Portuguese talent.
No departures this winter
Despite this extension, Tomas Araújo wanted to reassure his club and the supporters: a departure in January is not envisaged. “I want to continue to progress. We want to win every game and be champions this season, that’s our big goal,” he told the Benfica press.
With this new signing, Benfica secures its talent while ensuring a potential lucrative transfer for the summer transfer window. As for PSG, the operation remains possible if the club decides to strengthen its defense for next season.
