The Reds have made an extension offer to Salah’s representatives in a bid to extend his stay at Anfield beyond this summer, when his contract expires, The Athletic reports. Salah has been magnificent for Liverpool this season and shook the footballing world when, in late November, he openly criticized the club for their lack of effort to keep him. He seems to have finally gotten what he wanted.
After helping Liverpool beat Southampton, the Egyptian spoke to reporters and said: “It’s almost December and I haven’t received any offers to stay at the club yet. I’m probably more on the sidelines than on the inside. You know I have been in the club for many years. There is no club like this. But in the end, it’s not in my hands. As I said before, it’s December and I haven’t received anything regarding my future yet. I love the fans. The fans love me. Ultimately, it’s not in my hands or in the fans’ hands. Let’s wait and see.”
Salah was Liverpool’s hero again in their last game against Newcastle, scoring twice, taking his total to 13 goals and eight assists in just 14 games to propel the Reds to the top of the table. The Egyptian seems to be getting even better with age, so it’s no surprise that Liverpool are finally trying to keep the striker. Liverpool are also negotiating new leases with captain Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold – both in the final year of their current arrangement.
It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will be able to retain Salah, Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold beyond this season. Negotiations are likely to continue throughout the campaign, but players will be free to speak with other clubs in January. The Reds, at the top of the Premier League, still have work to do to win another title and retain their three stars.
