Bayern Munich announced that it was permanently retiring the number 5 in tribute to Franz Beckenbauer, club legend who died almost a year ago, and emblematic wearer of this jersey number from 1964 to 1977. During the assembly General, President Herbert Hainer underlined the importance of this gesture, a first in the history of the club, however already adopted by other major European teams.
A historic event for the Bavarian club, which will no longer sell jerseys printed with this number. The last player to have worn the legendary “5” will therefore forever remain the Frenchman Benjamin Pavard.
