Lionel Messi’s nomination for FIFA’s The Best award has been described as a “disgrace” by journalist Edu Aguirre.

Messi is among 11 names proposed to win the FIFA Best Player award, alongside Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, Vinicius Junior, Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappé. Messi led Argentina to Copa America glory this summer and scored 23 goals in just 25 games as his Inter Miami team reached the MLS playoffs.

However, the Herons were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round, losing to Atlanta United, while Messi only scored one goal in the Copa America, with Lautaro Martinez finishing as the tournament’s top scorer. Aguirre argued the Inter star should have been among the nominees instead of the 37-year-old.

“A shame”

“We paid tribute to Messi for winning a World Cup, it’s a shame. It’s a lack of respect for the people who follow football, » he declared on TNT Sports. “Lautaro Martinez won the Copa America, was the best player in the Argentina national team and is not (recognized by FIFA for this award). »

The 2022 World Cup winner has played his last match of 2024 and will enjoy a break before the new season. The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony will be held in January.
