“You cannot understand”. The title of the documentary Movistar devoted to Luis Enrique has never been more true than today, as the Spanish technician today seems to create a distance between him and his players, him and his staff, him and the sports advisor Luis Campos. Press articles reporting increasing tensions between Luis Enrique and the different components of the Parisian club have gained in frequency and intensity. Especially because tongues are loosened and because the divisive personality of the Iberian coach generates enmities.
The idyll fizzled out, and unanimity no longer exists internally. Moreover, the documentary of Movistar is part of the list of grievances, not only for my filmed rants which the players did not necessarily appreciate, but also for a form of coherence which this calls into question. This trainer, who makes no secret of hating the press, nevertheless agreed to give him moments of intimacy. And the enamored declarations of Luis Campos that we can see there seem like distant memories now.
The Luis Enrique style is already tired
Nasser Al-Khelaïfi’s sports advisor is today more circumspect about the way of working with the Asturian. Because the latter benefits a lot, perhaps too much, from his freedom of action, particularly in the area of transfers. The Victor Gyökeres case is the latest notable case. For this player courted by a lot of clubs, Luis Campos took the lead by organizing meetings and making the necessary contacts to initiate a possible transfer. But when he raised the matter with the coach, the latter brushed it aside. Not that he stopped Luis Campos from trying his luck, but he made him understand that the Swede would play very little.
The Luis Enrique style therefore frustrates internally, and even certain members of the staff are sometimes tired of his methods. If the substance of the discourse, with a strong institution and a collective placed above all else, is shared, Luis Enrique’s way of positioning himself as the sole decision-maker calls out. As Nasser Al-Khelaïfi officially recalled, PSG does not intend to change its strategy anytime soon, and it will not touch Luis Enrique. But the latter isolates himself more and more.
