A little slowdown for Liverpool. After their dream week, and these two prestigious successes against Real Madrid (2-0) and Manchester City (2-0), the Reds were held in check on Newcastle (3-3) this Wednesday evening, during the 14th day of the Premier League.
The Magpies are in the soft underbelly of the ranking but they do not lack talent, and Alexander Isak reminded us of this by opening the scoring with a sumptuous strike under the crossbar (35th). Liverpool equalized after the locker room, thanks to Curtis Jones (50th), but another individual feat, this time from Anthony Gordon (62nd), put Newcastle back in front.
A double from Salah, but…
Arne Slot responded with a triple change. Barely entered into play, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trent Alexander-Arnold (launched at the same time as Luis Diaz) combined to offer the equalizer to the inevitable Mohamed Salah (68th). And the Egyptian striker, in sparkling form, thought he could give his team the victory with a superb sequence in the area (83rd).
Unfortunately for the Reds, Caomhin Kelleher, impeccable since he took over in the absence of Alisson Becker, found himself on a free kick, letting Fabian Schär score from a tight angle (90th). Liverpool thus loses two points, and sees certain pursuers getting closer, such as Chelsea and Manchester City.
In great form, the Blues wandered around the Southampton pitch (1-5), notably with goals from Axel Disasi and Christopher Nkunku. Man City, for their part, ended their terrible series (4 defeats in a row in the Premier League) by dominating Nottingham Forest (3-0). The return as starter of Kevin De Bruyne, involved in the first two goals, probably has nothing to do with it.
