The contract signed between the LFP and DAZN for the broadcast of Ligue 1 could be terminated as early as December 2025, well before its scheduled expiry in 2029. In question, a clause introduced by the clubs stipulating that DAZN must reach 1.5 million subscribers by this date. However, the British platform currently only has 500,000, a figure well below the objective. This situation could lead LFP Media to explore new solutions for broadcasting the championship.
Faced with this impasse, DAZN attempted to attract new subscribers through aggressive promotions and diverse content, but without notable success. High piracy, which concerns 37% of spectators this season, and recurring broadcast quality problems, also undermine the broadcaster’s strategy.
A plan B for Ligue 1 in preparation
In anticipation of an anticipated breakup, the LFP formed a strategic committee made up of leaders of clubs such as PSG, OM and OL. This group is studying alternatives, including the creation of an internal streaming platform, controlled directly by the LFP. Such an initiative could allow the League to fully control the financial and commercial aspects of broadcasting, an option that had already been considered before the arrival of DAZN.
