Failing to tour the Champions League stadiums at the helm of a major European club or to prepare the matches of the French team as coach of the Blues (he will perhaps be after the 2026 World Cup and the departure of Didier Deschamps), Zinédine Zidane follows the performances of her three professional footballer sons every weekend. Luca (26 years old), Théo (22 years old) and the youngest Elyaz (18 years old) all play in a club in Andalusia, the eldest Enzo having retired.
This is a great achievement for Luca at Granada CF and for Elyaz at Real Betis. Luca, the goalkeeper formerly U20 tricolor, was one of the best goalkeepers in Liga 2 with Eibar last season before joining Granada but he did not earn his starting place in his new club, still in Spanish D2. He therefore lives his team’s season on the sidelines. A big disappointment. Elyaz left the Real Madrid youth teams for Betis last winter but is also languishing in the Verdiblancos reserve team, in Spanish D3.
Théo Zidane also on the bench
Théo is the last son of “Zizou” who left Real a few months ago, after three seasons with Castilla. The midfielder has carved out a place for himself in Cordoba CF’s midfield and even scored twice in his team’s recent Liga 2 matches before this weekend (against Castellon then Zaragoza). Théo unfortunately returned to the sidelines during Cordoba’s two matches this week, against Almeria on Tuesday (for a 4-0 defeat, goal from former Marseillais Luis Suarez) and Gijon this Sunday (2-0 defeat). Théo Zidane even remained on the bench this weekend!
Zinédine Zidane and his wife Véronique regularly have the opportunity to see one of their sons at work. Especially since the three active footballers live in three of the most beautiful cities in Andalusia, namely the emblematic capital Seville, the magnificent Granada where the Alhambra sits and little Cordoba well known for its mosque-cathedral. But if none of the sons of the French legend play in his club…
