The midfielder was back on English soil on Wednesday as his Real Madrid took on Liverpool on Merseyside. The Reds were, of course, one of the hottest clubs for Bellingham in 2023.
The Borussia Dortmund star was heavily linked with the Reds squad in the spring and early summer, but Liverpool ultimately dropped out of negotiations due to concerns over his price tag.
Real Madrid ended up swooping in on Bellingham, paying a whopping €103 million up front in a deal that could still rise to more than €130 million.
It was money well spent as the Englishman was crucial in his first season in Spain, winning the La Liga Player of the Season award after leading the club to domestic and Champions League success.
Bellingham discusses Liverpool and a move to the Premier League
Bellingham spoke to TNT Sports ahead of the Liverpool game. He was probed about negotiations with the Reds and whether he could see himself playing for the Anfield club in the future.
“I think it wasn’t as close as people made it out to be in the media, I think they may have misled people a little bit.”he said. “When Madrid came knocking on my door, I felt it was the perfect club for me.
“But Steven Gerrard is one of my great heroes. It would be nice to have a Steven Gerrard-style career, but it will be very difficult, so we’ll see. I am very happy in Madrid. I think the next 10, 15 years will be blank for me. »
It looks like one of England’s current best midfielders may never play in the Premier League.
