The 36-year-old is out of contract next summer, but according to Sport, Barcelona are likely to activate a clause in his contract that would extend his stay by a year. The report adds that they could even extend his stay at the Catalan team until 2027.

It comes days after Barca were linked with Manchester City talisman Haaland, 24, and Sporting CP star Gyokeres, 26. But due to the La Liga side’s high-profile financial problems, signing these prolific strikers could be a bridge too far. However, if Lewandowski can maintain his incredible goalscoring rate, which has seen him score 20 goals in 18 games so far this season, Barca may not need to dip into the market for at least another year moreover.

Lewandowski should continue

Sport adds that the Blaugrana are using Lewandowski’s performances as a ‘palliative’ as they look to save funds and recover from their current ‘economic crisis’. However, they reportedly intend to find a long-term successor for the Pole in the coming years.

Aside from speculation over Lewandowski’s contract and the club’s potential transfer plans, Barca host Brest in their next Champions League match on Tuesday evening. Hansi Flick’s side will look to bounce back after letting a late two-goal lead slip away in their 2-2 away draw against Celta Vigo on Saturday.
