On June 14, Paris Saint-Germain formalized the arrival of Matvey Safonov from FK Krasnodar. Since then, the Russian goalkeeper has played four matches with the capital club, including one in the Champions League, on September 18 against Girona.
Despite decent performances overall, number 39 of the Rouge et Bleu does not seem to be able to really compete with Gianluigi Donnarumma for a starting place. However, the Italian goalkeeper has once again shown his limits in C1 this season, notably against Arsenal (2-0 defeat). Even if Luis Enrique tried to maintain a semblance of suspense on this subject, the latter does not really seem threatened in his position.
Safonov, a limited footwork like… Donnarumma
“Honestly, we wonder why Safonov was recruited, underlines journalist Arthur Perrot on RMC. There is no logic and no competition for the goalkeeper position. It was said about him that he was comfortable on his feet but he is not at all. Donnarumma starts without any real surprises. Safonov is below. »
The recruitment of Safonov may indeed raise questions since his main shortcoming seems to be the same as that of the current number 99 of the capital club. However, for Luis Enrique, having a last bulwark who has good footwork is fundamental.
