The French captain finally made his dream move to Santiago Bernabeu a reality this summer after leaving Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent. However, Mbappé has failed to live up to expectations from this long-awaited transfer, as he has only managed to score one goal in his last seven outings in all competitions.
The 25-year-old has been given a more central role in his new club’s team attack by manager Carlo Ancelotti instead of deploying him in his preferred left-winger role. Mbappé also plays in the center for the Blues, although he has been left out of the last two teams, and Deschamps has insisted that role will not change upon his return. However, the coach pointed out a slight difference in the way Mbappé plays for each team which may explain his struggles.
“He can play in several positions, after that it’s a question of association. You’re going to tell me that I’m ‘crazy’ to put him as a center forward but he also played center forward with his last two coaches (Ancelotti and Luis Enrique at PSG).
A question of balance
