After a long legal standoff, Benjamin Mendy won his case against Manchester City, who will have to pay him the majority of his unpaid salaries. The former Citizens defender, who claimed around 13 million euros, had his income suspended after his incarceration in September 2021, following accusations of rape and sexual assault of which he was acquitted. Judge Joanne Dunlop ruled City could not withhold his wages when he was free and ready to play, despite the restrictions imposed by his legal situation.

The court decision: a partial success for Mendy

According to the verdict, Mendy will be able to receive the majority of his salaries between September 2021 and the end of his contract in June 2023, except for periods of detention where salary withholding was justified. The judge concluded that “the absence of a clause authorizing Manchester City to suspend salary outside of incarceration” vindicated Mendy.
