Sir Alex Ferguson (82) has finally revealed the real reason for his departure from Manchester United. Eleven years after his retirement, the Scottish technician revealed that his advanced age (71 years old at the time) was not necessarily the reason which pushed him to leave the Red Devils bench. His long-time wife, Cathy, was actually grieving for her sister and Ferguson had decided to stop everything to spend more time with her.
“Cathy’s sister had died the previous October and she was definitely lost, so at Christmas I said to her, ‘Look, I’m going to retire at the end of the season.’ I knew by her reaction that she was excited because she was alone. She had given her life to me, all to me. She took care of me because of my work, she raised the children… When I said I was going to retire, she was delighted and I knew it. I could see it by his body language”confides the Premier League legend in Ally McCoist’s podcast. An honorable decision which finally reveals the truth to Manchester United supporters, more than ten years after the end of the Ferguson adventure.
