In the absence of Kylian Mbappé, who was left to rest during this break, and Antoine Griezmann, who had just retired, the France team was looking for a new captain. Didier Deschamps seemed to be hesitating between three players, namely Mike Maignan, Jules Koundé and Aurélien Tchouameni. Finally, the Blues coach decided to give him to the Real Madrid midfielder who therefore becomes vice-captain of the Blues. At least, for now…

At a press conference, DD made a point of explaining his choice and visibly cast doubt on the upcoming deadlines. “I chose Aurélien because I consider that he has the profile to assume this responsibility, because of his experience, because of what he is – that should not change the player that he is – but it is one more step for him. He will have this additional task, and the obligation or constraint of coming to a conference. But he is not alone, other players can have leadership, Mike, Ibou, Jules… For Monday, we will see. For afterwards too”he explained. Which implies that we could also have another captain on Monday against Belgium…
