The second attempt was the right one. A month after its defeat in the Leagues Cup final, Los Angeles FC won the US Open Cup after beating Sporting Kansas City in the final (3-1 aet). Enough to allow Hugo Lloris and Olivier Giroud to win their first trophy in the United States.
And the two French players, who started at kick-off, played a valuable role in the victory of the Californian franchise. The French goalkeeper was the first to shine by making saves at the start of the match (9e23e). Conversely, the top scorer in the history of the French team missed a first big opportunity shortly before the break on a service from Denis Bouanga.
Olivier Giroud’s second goal
But the second attempt was the right one for the former Gunner. Perfectly served at 6m by the Pole Mateusz Bogusz, Olivier Giroud did not let this time pass the opportunity to open the score in the 5th minute, taking advantage to score his second goal in ten matches (including five starts). But the joy was short-lived for the Californians, Sporting Kansas City equalizing at the hour mark thanks to Erik Thommy.
The fate of the match was finally decided in overtime. Dominant, the Californians were rewarded by Omar Campos (102nd) and Kei Kamara (109th) who sealed the victory for LAFC, allowing the Los Angeles franchise to win the only trophy missing from its list of achievements. Fourth in the Western Conference in MLS, the Angelinos now hope to quickly validate their ticket for the playoffs.
