Toni Kroos has mocked UEFA after a report suggested Germany should have been awarded a penalty in their Euro 2024 quarter-final against Spain.

Germany felt they should have been awarded a penalty in extra time when Jamal Musiala’s shot hit Marc Cucurella’s arm. Referee Anthony Taylor did not award a penalty and VAR Stuart Attwell chose not to overturn it. Spain went on to beat Germany and progress to the semi-finals, eventually becoming champions.

A report from UEFA’s referees committee on the summer tournament has now been leaked and has sparked outrage in Germany. The report singles out Cucurella’s handball as one of the incidents that should have ended in a penalty, sparking a frustrated reaction from Kroos.

Germany wronged at the Euro!

“It took them three months to realize that there was a Cucurella hand, something that almost everyone could see in a second. That reassures me a lot (laughs)”, he said according to Marca. “Can I say that I am now European champion because it is officially confirmed? I don’t think so.”

The 34-year-old called time on his career after that match. He left football after winning the Champions League six times, La Liga four times and the Bundesliga three times at club level and winning the 2014 World Cup with Germany.
