Trial of the century: Manchester City trembles for its stars

If there is one topic that has been making headlines in England since last Monday, it is the famous trial against Manchester City. The reigning Premier League champion faces 115 charges after circumventing financial rules in England between 2009 and 2018. The verdict is not expected before 2025 but already the local press is having a field day, calling this case “the trial of the century”. The consequences could be dire.

The sanctions can go as far as exclusion from the Premier League, and even from other English competitions with the two national cups, in addition to the European cups. We are of course thinking of the Champions League that the Cityzens won in 2023. If the public statements of the leaders and Pep Guardiola have always been intended to be positive, the truth would be very different behind the scenes. According to the Daily Maileveryone tries to preserve their interests in case the trial goes badly.

City stars’ agents start prospecting

This is particularly the case for Manchester City players’ agents. In the interest of their client, they are starting to look at all possible options in the event of a heavy sanction from the English club. Obviously, this would lead the team’s stars to leave to continue their careers at the highest level, while the Skyblues would sink. Some cases are even more commented on than others, such as those of Rodri, courted by Real Madrid, or Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland.

The agents have made contact with other clubs in order to study possible transfers, and the options available to them. After all, governing is planning. The same would be true for Pep Guardiola, who, let us remember, is under contract until 2025. He has not yet extended, and for the British media, this is probably not a coincidence. In the worst-case scenario, the Spanish coach would be free to do what he wants, dodging a lot of procedures in the process.
