Marquinhos takes the tide

Considered for several years as one of the best defenders in the world, Marquinhos has seen his level of play decline in recent times.

This Saturday evening, Stade de Reims welcomes Paris Saint-Germain on the occasion of the fifth day of Ligue 1. From the ninth minute of play, Luka Elsner’s men opened the scoring. After seeing his shot blocked too timidly by Marquinhos, Nakamura was able to adjust Safonov from close range (1-0).

Placed at the heart of a three-man defence alongside Pacho and Beraldo, the Brazilian central defender was severely criticised during this first period by viewers of the match. “Marquinhos, as usual, loves to give it back to the attacker in the middle”notes an Internet user on X (formerly Twitter).

Marquinhos, the decline

“I look at Marquinhos with the armband on his arm and I say to myself that it’s still incredible that he’s the only survivor after all these years when he’s surely the main person responsible for all of PSG’s fiascos,” writes another tweeter.

Having arrived in the French capital in 2013 from AS Roma, the Auriverde international is taking part in his 448th match this Saturday eveninge meeting in the red and blue jersey. He became the most capped player in PSG history last April, passing club legend Jean-Marc Pilorget.
