FC Barcelona have started their European campaign in a disappointing manner. On the road to the Rock this Thursday, the Catalans lost to AS Monaco (2-1) on the pitch of the Stade Louis II. The Blaugranas, who were hoping to erase the defeat suffered in pre-season against the Monegasques (0-3), were quickly reduced to ten after Eric García was sent off after just ten minutes.
Down to one man, the current La Liga leader had to face repeated attacks from Adi Hütter’s men, before conceding their first defeat of the season. However, the Culés had managed to equalize after Maghnes Akliouche opened the scoring, thanks to a goal from their young star, Lamine Yamal. But the entry into play of Georges Ilenikhena in the second half allowed the club from the Principality to regain the advantage and seal the victory.
Hansi Flick remains optimistic
Despite the setback, coach Hansi Flick was satisfied with his team’s performance. The German coach is, however, aware that Barça will have to bounce back in the next Champions League matches.
“I am very proud of this team and I am very optimistic with them. We have to accept the defeat, but we have seven games left and I am sure we will come back.”assured the former Germany coach at a press conference.
