This time it’s the right one! That’s what all Paris Saint-Germain fans are hoping for as they begin their Champions League campaign. The club’s stated objective since its acquisition by QSI, the biggest European competition has so far refused to allow Parisian players. Will the new formula bring PSG luck? In any case, it offers them a big adversity from the start of the competition. With the new league phase, which brings together the 36 teams in the same ranking, they can’t afford to mess up. Even less so for the first day, despite the tricky match that awaits Luis Enrique’s men.

Indeed, on Wednesday evening, PSG host Girona, the surprise team of the last Liga season. They finished their race in 3rd place, after leading the championship for a long time and making life difficult for the big names that are Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. In any case, they sealed their qualification for the Champions League, the first in their history, thanks to the talent of their coach, Michel (namesake of the former OM coach), and some key men, such as Victor Tsygankov and Cristian Stuani. Strengthened by some big names during the summer transfer window (Van de Beek, Bryan Gil, Pau Lopez, Arnaut Danjuma), Girona arrives at the Parc des Princes with the firm intention of upsetting PSG.

The new PSG has taken shape

But PSG has so far managed to avoid the pitfalls encountered. First by quickly making people forget about Kylian Mbappé, who left for Real Madrid, thanks to the new efficiency of Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé. Then by thrashing two of its rivals from last season, LOSC and Brest, who were largely beaten in Ligue 1. Finally, by letting Luis Enrique continue his mission, that of creating a young, combative and talented team, which has welcomed new players like Désiré Doué, João Neves and Willian Pacho. Will this 2024-2025 version of PSG be able to get out of this new phase of the Champions League?
