Mike Maignan had probably hoped for something else, like his team, for AC Milan’s entry into the Champions League. Against Liverpool, the Rossoneri opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, with a goal from Cristian Pulisic, before suffering the Reds’ domination for the rest of the match: STATS, and 3-1 as the final score.
Maignan conceded two goals for which his responsibility can be questioned, as they were both headers from the six-yard box. On the first, a free kick from the centre and close, the French goalkeeper tried to get out but was clearly beaten by the impressive vertical movement of his teammate for the Blues Ibrahima Konaté (1-1, 23rd). On the second, a corner taken at the near post, Maignan stayed on his line and was shot down by Virgil Van Dijk at the near post (1-2, 42nd).
Maignan goes out with injury
During this first period where the English waves crashed on his goal, Maignan still managed two great saves in front of Mohamed Salah (40th) and Cody Gakpo (45th+3). But it could have been worse, because the former Lille player was saved by his crossbar on two shots from Salah (17th, 29th).
In the second half, the Blues’ goalkeeper did not have the opportunity to make up for it. On one of the first opposing attacks, Maignan was hit by Diogo Jota, who hit him on the knee. After being treated for several minutes, he gave way to Lorenzo Torriani (51st), and saw his young teammate (19 years old) concede a third goal from Dominik Szoboszlai (1-3, 67th).
