Kylian Mbappe has chosen to avoid the controversial penalty debate at Real Madrid as he is forced to share the blame with Vinicius Junior.

Real Madrid returned to La Liga action with a confident 2-0 win over Real Sociedad, in which Mbappe and Vinicius Junior both found the back of the net from the penalty spot. Carlo Ancelotti refused to name Mbappe or Vinicius as the taker, instead leaving the decision to the players.

After the win in San Sebastian, Mbappe spoke of his growing comfort within the team, stressing that the most important factor was that all the penalties ended in goals, regardless of who took them.

Mbappé avoids the debate

“With every game I feel better. I understand what the team, the manager and my teammates need.“, Mbappé said. “The important thing is that the four penalties were goals, not who took them.”

The 2018 World Cup winner has made it clear that his main focus is on helping the team achieve success, particularly as the club prepares for their upcoming UEFA Champions League campaign.

“I came to Madrid to experience these kinds of Champions League evenings“, Mbappé said. “I am very focused on what we have to do. The Champions League has changed; it is a new competition, and we have to win.”

Before this match, the Vinicius-Mbappe duo had already scored a penalty each, making the situation all the more interesting for fans looking to see who will come out on top in crucial moments. Vinicius appears to have a slight advantage in terms of seniority, having been a regular at the club for longer than Mbappe. However, it seems the Frenchman remains unfazed, choosing to focus on the team as a whole rather than individual accolades.
