Talented number 1 goalkeeper for the French team since Hugo Lloris retired after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Mike Maignan kept a 14th clean sheet in 24 international matches during Les Bleus’ victory against Belgium (2-0) on Monday evening at Groupama Stadium. The AC Milan player, however, conceded three goals against Italy last Friday at the Parc des Princes, also in the Nations League, and now has, with 15 goals conceded, a goals conceded ratio per match of 0.63.
If Didier Deschamps’ team remains solid in the rest of the 2024-2025 Nations League (against the Italians, the Belgians and Israel twice), Maignan will get closer to or surpass the two most successful goalkeepers in the history of the EDF: Fabien Barthez and Grégory Coupet. The iconic 98 world champion conceded 48 goals in 87 selections, for a ratio of 0.55, while his successor from Lyon conceded 19 in 34 outings, for a ratio of 0.56 goals conceded per match. Not too bad!
Landreau ahead of Barthez and Coupet
In this little game, it is Mickaël Landreau who has the best ratio of goals conceded per match played with the Blues, at 0.27, since he has only gone to get the ball in the back of his net three times in eleven matches. The former Nantes and Parisian unfortunately missed a long-range shot from the Scot James McFadden, in September 2007 at the Parc des Princes, which dealt a big blow to his French career. Philippe Bergeroo follows closely behind him with a ratio of 0.33 but in three matches.
It should be noted that six goalkeepers have not conceded a single goal during their one and only selection for the French team: Benoît Costil, Cédric Carrasso, Stéphane Porato and Richard Dutruel. Lionel Charbonnier, another 98 world champion, has only one selection, but has conceded two goals.
