Thomas Tuchel declined the chance to take over Manchester United this summer.

Manchester United came close to signing Thomas Tuchel this summer, according to German pundit Marcel Reif, who claims that a deal was even close to being struck for the German coach to take over from Erik ten Hag.

He told BILD: “I would have bet a lot on Tuchel replacing Ten Hag. I recently had another conversation with someone who is very close to this file. It was quite advanced, there was almost an agreement.”

Tuchel was close to signing

According to Reif, Tuchel, a former Chelsea and PSG manager, pulled out of the negotiations because United insisted he would not have control over transfers. He added:
“As for the staff, there were different views.”

“Just when everything seemed to be done, Tuchel told them: ‘I won’t do that! I’ll never do that to myself again, I go to a club and there starts to be interference’,”
added the German journalist.

Tuchel is currently unemployed, waiting for an interesting new challenge. Given the Red Devils’ upside-down start to the season, Manchester officials must perhaps regret not having responded favourably to his demands.
