After reaching the top and becoming a credible candidate for the Ballon d’Or, Paul Pogba has seen the trajectory of his career decline at high speed. And the starting point of this fall was his transfer to Manchester United just after the 2018 World Cup.
This transfer should never have happened. This is in any case what his former teammate in the national team, Patrice Evra, reveals. The latter thinks that his compatriot was recruited only to humiliate Sir Alex Ferguson, who had allowed Pogba to leave four years earlier for Juventus on a free transfer.
Pogba didn’t listen to Evra
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Evra said:
“Manchester United brought in Paul Pogba to humiliate Sir Alex Ferguson. I told Paul not to come back because he wanted Real Madrid and Madrid wanted him, but Florentino Perez didn’t want to pay the money.” The sum in question was not insignificant since United had at the time broken the world transfer record, with an investment of 105 million euros.
Looking back, Evra believes Pogba should never have returned to the Red Devils. “His agent called United and he signed with them without telling me. The club were happy because they were selling shirts, you know kids love Pogba – it was more commercial than anything that was happening on the pitch.”
