As the transfer window is about to close its doors, financial fair play has, once again, got the better of Barça’s ambitions.

Despite an impeccable start to the season with three wins in as many games, FC Barcelona have to deal with a new blow, the injury to Marc Bernal. This young talent, who started in midfield as a double pivot in the Blaugranas’ last three games, suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the match against Rayo Vallecano (2-1) on Tuesday.

To fill his absence, the Catalan leaders explored the possibility of recruiting Stefan Bajcetic, defensive midfielder of Liverpool. They considered a paying loan of the young Serbian for 4 million euros, but were unable to finalize the operation.

Barça still weighed down by its wage bill

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barça, forced to respect the rules of the financial fair play of La Liga, had to abandon this avenue. Already slowed down in the Nico Williams case, the Spanish vice-champion sees once again its ambitions limited in this final stretch of the summer transfer window by a wage bill that is still too high.

The transfer window specialist reports that the Reds’ star prospect has finally headed to Austria, where he will join Salzburg on a season-long loan with no option to buy. He is expected this Thursday to undergo the usual medical.
