Bayern Munich have started their new season on a new footing, with two victories against Grasshopper (4-0), and against Wolfsburg (2-3) in the Bundesliga. The latest success of the Rotten at the Volkswagen-Arena has however highlighted the main weakness of the Bavarian team, its defensive hinge.
Central defender Kim Min-jae, who played alongside Dayot Upamecano, was at fault during a clearance on Sunday, allowing Lovro Majer to double the lead. This error only makes matters worse for the former Partenopei rock, already targeted by criticism for the notable difference between his current performances and those he displayed at Naples. A feeling shared by former Bayern star Lothar Matthäus, who bitterly regrets the departure of De Ligt, transferred this summer to Manchester United.
“It’s pathetic that there is no such leader”
“It’s not possible for him (Kim Min-jae, editor’s note) to play like he did in Naples. Defensively, they played very differently there.”judged the 1990 world champion on Sky Sports.
“They sold De Ligt when he was the most stable defender of the last two years. He was the leader of the defense. Today, Bayern is again looking for a successor to Alaba. It’s pathetic that there is no such leader.”added Matthäus.
