Arsenal Gunners have got their hands on one of the key players in Spain’s triumph at the last Euro.

And another Spaniard at Arsenal. The vice-champion of England has bought the services of Mikel Merino, the midfielder of Real Sociedad and La Roja.

Merino, 28, will wear the number 23 jersey at the Emirates Stadium. His adaptation to the club should be facilitated by the presence of his compatriots David Raya, Patino and coach Arteta.

Arsenal shift into top gear

Arsenal had to pay 38.5 million euros for the Basque player. An investment that is added to the 45 million euros spent on the Italian full-back Riccardo Calafiori. The commitment period is one year, plus an additional year as an option. Merino’s debut with the Londoners could take place as early as next weekend.

Merino stood out at the last Euro with the Seleccion. He was only a substitute, but still managed to play a leading role in his team’s triumph. In the quarter-finals, he was the one who scored the winning goal against Germany in extra time.
