Since 2009, Manuel Neuer has accumulated 124 caps with the Nationalmannschaft. And he will not have a 125th. This Wednesday, the Bayern Munich player announced on his social networks that he is putting an end to his international career.
“This day had to come. Today, my career with the German national team comes to an end. Anyone who knows me knows that this was not an easy decision to make. I made my debut over 15 years ago against the United Arab Emirates and I was very nervous at the time. We had our ups and downs. The highlight was obviously the World Cup victory in Brazil. When I look back today, I am very proud and grateful to have stood alongside my teammates on the pitch and to have been captain for seven years.”said the Gelsenkirchen native in a video posted on Instagram.
Neuer continues his adventure with Bayern
The fifth most capped player in his country’s history, the German goalkeeper continues: “To crown my career, I was able to come back from injury and take part in a home Euro. I would like to thank all the DFB employees who supported me, especially the coaches and goalkeeping coaches, the staff – we were a family. And also my teammates with whom I had a lot of fun playing and training. I would especially like to thank the fans who supported me. The support was always there. I loved wearing the German national team jersey. I thank you with all my heart.”
Manuel Neuer will still be a Bayern Munich player next season. In November 2023, he extended his contract with the Bavarian club until June 2025. Sven Ulreich, his understudy, also extended his contract until the same date.
