Mason Greenwood received an exceptional rating from L’Equipe, a newspaper known for its severity, after his Ligue 1 debut with Marseille, with two goals.

The England international, who has only been capped once, is taking on a new challenge in France after cutting ties with Manchester United. A £27million move has taken him from Old Trafford to the Stade Velodrome.

Greenwood enjoyed a productive loan spell at Getafe last season, winning the Player of the Year award, and is already making an impression in French football – after initially facing opposition to his move. The 22-year-old was among the goalscorers in pre-season.

This form continued in competitive action, with a brace recorded on his Ligue 1 debut for Marseille. Greenwood opened the scoring in a 5-1 win over Brest, before converting a penalty. His efforts earned him an inaugural Man of the Match award.

L’Equipe, who are renowned for their harsh post-match assessments, were pleased with what they saw from Greenwood. He was given a notable eight, with only two players – Nantes goalkeeper Alban Lafont and Rennes forward Amine Gouiri – able to match that score on matchday one, with the Englishman named in the French newspaper’s team of the week.
