The transfer window has been in full swing in England since its official opening on June 14. At Old Trafford, Manchester United have already registered the arrival of two reinforcements on the banks of the Irwell: French defender Leny Yoro and Dutch center forward Joshua Zirkzee. However, the Red Devils are far from having finished strengthening their defense.
Indeed, the management of the Mancunian club is considering finalizing the recruitment of Matthijs De Ligt soon, in particular to compensate for the three-month absence of Yoro, injured in the foot. However, this idea does not seem to really convince the former United defender, Rio Ferdinand, who expressed his doubts:

“There is a lot of uncertainty with this signing”
“He’s had a lot of injuries, hasn’t started many games in the last two or three years and Man United are spending £45-50m on him,” said the former Manchester captain. “Is he going to come to Man United and make a difference?”
And Ferdinand concluded: “I think it’s a big ask for him and all eyes will be on him. There’s a lot of pressure, a lot of opportunity for him, but I think there’s a lot of uncertainty with this signing because his previous seasons with two big clubs didn’t go as well as we would have hoped.”
The sad observation about De Ligt
The reservations about De Ligt are also shared by another former team-mate and fellow United legend, Paul Scholes. “With Man United we are talking about players who can’t fit into their team. The fact that he (De Ligt) doesn’t play for them (Bayern) must be a big concern, especially when Eric Dier plays in front of him. It’s a major concern for me.”he confided to the Fan Debate of The Overlap.
“When you bring in players for £40m or £50m just because they played for them two or three years ago. Juventus got rid of him, he wasn’t good enough there and he clearly wasn’t good enough at Bayern Munich,” added the Ginger Prince.
