Having landed from Juventus Turin to Bayern Munich last summer, Matthijs De Ligt might not last long in Bavaria. Placed on the transfer list by the Rotten management, he has, in fact, been linked recently to Manchester United. Although the Red Devils have already completed the arrival of a first reinforcement in defense with Leny Yoro, the recruitment of the Dutchman would still be desired and validated by some, notably René Meulensteen.
Former assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at United, the Dutch coach is in favour of a transfer of De Ligt to Old Trafford. He believes that the Leiderdorp native would be perfect under the orders of Erik Ten Hag, his former coach at Ajax Amsterdam. Especially with the three-month unavailability of Yoro, injured in the foot, and the potential departures of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire, both of whom are out of contract in June 2025.
“United need to strengthen”
“Matthijs De Ligt can reach his potential in the Premier League,” Meulensteen said at the microphone of
BoyleSports: “He’s a player who fits the division. He’s strong and powerful and the fact that Erik Ten Hag knows him is a good thing. De Ligt was at Ajax when Ten Hag was there and he was one of the best players in Holland. (…) I think his move to Juventus didn’t really work out and his career ended at Bayern Munich because they think he’s not good enough on the pitch. But United need to strengthen and he’ll do that at centre-back.”
It should be noted that De Ligt has already been the subject of a concrete offer from MU, after a verbal agreement with the 24-year-old player, but without success. Indeed, the Rekordmeister declined the offer of 35 million euros from his English counterpart, demanding 50 million according to the journalist from ImageChristian Falk. But so far, the Mancunians have refused to align with these demands.
