The outcome of the saga had been awaited for weeks. Author of a very good season on loan at Leipzig (43 matches, 10 goals, 15 assists), Xavi Simons was expected at PSG this summer by Parisian supporters. It must be said, the Dutch international (20 caps, 2 goals), long perceived as an unfinished product, seemed to have finally broken the glass ceiling to return to Paris and embody the new face of the club, after the departure of Kylian Mbappé.
This is also why PSG did not hesitate to reactivate his buyout clause a year ago, after a first impressive loan to PSV. But as we revealed to you, the 21-year-old player remained upset by the treatment and false promises that had been made to him internally, which may partly explain his choice to return to Germany, not to sign for Bayern Munich, who were nevertheless on the lookout for the deal… but to extend his stay in Leipzig.
A third consecutive loan
As announced by the Parisian club today, Xavi Simons is indeed back for a season in Saxony, still on loan, and with no obligation to buy. “The Dutch midfielder is once again loaned without an option to buy to RB Leipzig for the 2024-2025 season, after a convincing season with the Bundesliga team in 2023-2024”the statement said.
Another nice move for Leipzig, 4th in the Bundesliga last year and qualified for the Champions League this season. Xavi Simons will notably find Loïs Openda, whose relationship had caused damage on the Bundesliga pitches, but also some recruits like the Belgian goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt, or the very promising Assan Ouédraogo. As a reminder, Simons remains tied to PSG until 2027.
