Since obtaining his coaching diplomas, Zinedine Zidane has only worked at Real Madrid. First as assistant and then at the head of Castilla, the club’s reserve team, between 2013 and 2016, the French technician has enjoyed immense success with the first team, notably winning three Champions Leagues (2016, 2017, 2018), one Liga (2017), and one Spanish Super Cup (2018).
After resigning from his position in May 2018, Zidane returned to the Merengues bench in March 2019. Finally, he definitively left the Santiago Bernabéu residents in June 2021, not without having won another Spanish league title and a new Spanish Super Cup in 2020.
A serious option
Since then, the Ballon d’Or 98 has repeatedly expressed his desire to take the reins of the French team, evoking an unfinished story with Les Bleus. However, the extension of Didier Deschamps, at the end of the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, put an end to Zidane’s hopes of leading the tricolor selection in the near future.
Despite this, the popularity of the former darling of the French has continued to grow. His name has also been regularly associated with several major clubs on the Old Continent, including Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Juventus Turin, and even Olympique Marseille.
Recently, the journalist from The AthleticMario Cortegana, has rekindled the debate on Zidane’s future. According to our colleague, the next destination of the 98 world champion could well be Madrid. The former Bordeaux player would indeed be close to the management of Real, after tensions that appeared when he left in 2021. He would thus be considered a serious option to guide the Casa Blanca and its stars, namely Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr, and Jude Bellingham, after Carlo Ancelotti, whose contract runs until June 2026.
