Real Madrid’s general manager and, by all accounts, one of the main architects of its success in recent years, Jose Angel Sanchez, has been named in an official complaint regarding a potential “environmental crime”.
Mr Sanchez is also the chief executive and sole director of Real Madrid’s sister company, Real Madrid Estadio, which has undertaken works around the stadium and renovations to the Santiago Bernabeu. Cadena Cope reports that a complaint has been accepted by a judge and will now be investigated in Spain.
Noise pollution in Bernabeu
Sanchez and RME will now have to provide all studies carried out on the potential noise pollution caused by the numerous concerts held at the Bernabeu over the summer. The group “Victims of the Bernabeu” filed the complaint after numerous complaints of noise pollution were filed with the municipality between April 26 and July 15, following concerts given by artists such as Duki and Taylor Swift.
They say Sanchez and RME are guilty of violating a planning law due to a lack of soundproofing, hence the request for relevant documents. This is the latest episode in a battle between Bernabeu residents and Real Madrid. Two complaints have been filed with the European Court of Justice over environmental issues, while in recent weeks Real Madrid have agreed to limit the number of concerts to 20 per year. Los Blancos have also agreed to install sound-absorbing panels for concerts, but it remains to be seen how effective this method will be.
