Nico Williams has returned home to Bilbao and a decision on his future is expected soon.

Athletic Club are prepared to do anything to keep his services for at least one more season, while FC Barcelona are pushing hard to sign him and have already reached an agreement with the player’s agent.

FC Barcelona are willing to pay Williams’ release clause, valued at €58 million, and as soon as the 22-year-old gives his consent, they will proceed with the operation. However, the club’s directors are threatened by the presence of Paris Saint-Germain, with the Ligue 1 club having emerged as a serious candidate to secure Williams’ services.

A clause of €58 million

According to MD, Barcelona are taking PSG’s interest in Williams very seriously, as they believe the reigning Ligue 1 champions could tempt the Euro 2024 winners – due to the financial package they can offer, as well as their stronger position in the Champions League. At PSG, Williams would replace Kylian Mbappe, who left earlier this summer to join Real Madrid.

Barcelona will hope they have done enough to convince Williams, having already convinced his agent. The lure of staying in Spain and playing alongside his friends Lamine Yamal and Alejandro Balde could be enough not only to beat PSG, but also to entice him to leave his boyhood club, Athletic.
