During the friendly match held this Monday between Como and Wolverhampton, Hwang Hee-Chan was allegedly the victim of racist remarks from a defender of the Italian club. Remarks that prompted a reaction from Daniel Podence, the Korean’s teammate, who was sent off for punching the author of the remarks. The Italian club spoke out on social media and defended its player.

“Our club does not tolerate racism and condemns all forms of racism in the strongest possible terms. We have spoken to our defender to understand what was said. He told us that he had told his fellow defender, ‘ignore him, he thinks he’s Jackie Chan’. After a lengthy discussion with the player, we are confident that this was a reference to the player’s name, and the constant references to his nickname ‘Channy’ made by his own team-mates on the pitch. From what we understand, our player did not say anything discriminatory. We are disappointed with the way some Wolves players have reacted. This has reached unbelievable proportions.” A surreal speech from Mirwan Suwarso, the official representative of the group that owns the club.
