Didier Deschamps’ retention as coach of the French team has provoked very mixed reactions. Raymond Domenech has given his own.

Eliminated on Tuesday evening with the French team, in the semi-final of Euro 2024 against Spain (2-1), Didier Deschamps did not have long to wait before knowing what his boss had decided regarding his future. The following day, the president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, confirmed the French coach in his functions until the end of his contract set for 2026. This decision has since been much commented on and on Thursday, Raymond Domenech delivered his clear point of view.

The channel consultant The Team took up the cause of Didier Deschamps, ironically listing the reasons why, according to him, the coach failed against the Spanish. We can have the debate. Everyone has it and wants to have it. But on the other hand, (his retention) is a done deal. So what are we debating? (…) What was missing was a Mbappé who was present that day, a Dembélé who opened his eyes, that Barcola perhaps returned a little faster, that Griezmann came to this Euro. That’s what was missing. »

“What we like in France is that we have to change things”

Explaining that Didier Deschamps was rather a victim of circumstances and the poor form of his players, the man who took France to the final of the 2006 World Cup then became annoyed that some people spent their time asking for change: ”
Are we going to have a debate? And then in two months, when Mbappé is at Real (Madrid) and he is at his best and he is playing with the French team and he is scoring goals, well we will win the matches and we will say that everything is fine. What we like in France is that we have to change things. »

In the meantime, there will be no change on the French bench, especially since Didier Deschamps is determined to continue the adventure until the World Cup in two years in the United States. While the situation is not exactly the same, the coach had managed to reinvent himself after the premature exit at Euro 2021. Will he succeed in doing so again?
