Spain, Germany, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, Turkey, England, Switzerland: out of the thirty-two teams qualified for Euro 2024, only eight remain in a position to claim the final victory on July 14 in Berlin. The overall prize money for the competition, unveiled by UEFA last April, is €331 million. A jackpot of 27.25 million euros for the Blues?
The rest of the competition promises prizes of 4 million euros for the semi-finalists, 5 million euros for the unfortunate finalist and 8 million euros for the overall winner. “The maximum amount that the European champion team can reach, if it wins its three group matches, is 28.25 million euros”UEFA said. But how much exactly will Didier Deschamps’ players get?
Held to a draw by the Netherlands (0-0) and Poland (0-0) in the first round, Kylian Mbappé’s teammates can only pocket a maximum of 27.25 million euros if they go all the way through the tournament. The president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, having maintained the 30% previously given by the body to French players and staff, a bonus of 298,000 euros awaits each of them in the event of a title.
Bonuses lower than those of the 2022 World Cup
But that’s not all! The players will also receive an image rights bonus of 21,200 euros per match for their participation in the various commercial operations with the French team’s partners. Thus, between the first group match and the final (seven matches in all), the bill will climb to 148,400 euros for these image rights, or a check for 446,400 euros per person in total.
An amount lower than the 490,000 euros awarded after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which many French players had donated to associations. For comparison, the Blues, semi-finalists of Euro 2022, had received only 20,000 euros in bonuses. And for their quarter-final at the World Cup a year later, Hervé Renard’s players had pocketed some 80,000 euros.
