Didier Deschamps has just taken the French team to the quarter-finals of a major tournament. And this is the fourth time he has achieved this same performance. It was only at Euro 2021 that he had failed in this challenge. Despite this record, the highly respected technician still has detractors. And not just a few.
Accustomed to being taken down by Christophe Dugarry, his former teammate in Blue, the French coach has just been attacked by the other star consultant of RMC Sport, in the person of Jérôme Rothen.
“Deschamps has been lost for five or six years”
The latter did not mince his words against the coach born in Bayonne in his analysis of the Tricolores’ journey at the Euro:
“I was one of the first to defend him. I think that in his way of doing things, there was emotion. But there we have the right to expect with this selection which has a golden generation that gives off more control and emotions. I don’t care about having a defensive team but when you have the ball you have to know what to do with it.”
The former PSG player went on to say that it is not only today that he is bothered by what his national team is giving off. “We are in the continuity of 2022. We were horrible in the first matches. That was masked by the crazy final. And today, it’s happening one after the other. For me, there is a weariness with Deschamps. For me, he has lost his way for 5-6 years. Even in communication. And I’m afraid that at some point the axe will fall.”
