Faced with these lackluster performances and the difficulties encountered by Gareth Southgate and his staff in finding the right formula despite a talented squad, the English coach finds himself under pressure. Criticism is coming from all sides, and Paul Scholes, former Manchester United legend, has not minced his words.
A waste of talent
The former England midfielder criticised the idea of repositioning Jude Bellingham deeper in midfield, alongside Declan Rice. A tactical choice that should allow Phil Foden to play as a real number 10 behind the attack, a solution that does not convince Scholes at all.
Indeed, for him, repositioning Bellingham lower would be a serious mistake. “(Kobbie) Mainoo will make you play, Foden and Bellingham will make you win games, think forward and take fewer touches please later in December”wrote on Instagram the man with 66 caps and 14 goals for England.
