Nasri and Benzema, the big surprise

Didier Deschamps’ French team failed to score during the first period of the match against Austria on Tuesday at Euro 2024. Which gives a pretty astonishing statistic!

After its 1-0 victory against Austria and its 0-0 draw against the Netherlands, the French team failed to break the deadlock in the first period during its third and final Group D match. Euro 2024 against Poland, a team already eliminated, Tuesday in Dortmund. The Blues of Kylian Mbappé (back) however had the mission to win largely against the Poles in order to hope to overtake the Oranje at the top of the ranking and offer themselves a less complicated part of the table.

Didier Deschamps’ team, obviously criticized for its minimalist football, visibly has a lot of difficulty making a difference during the first 45 minutes of its matches. France has only scored four goals in the first half in its last 15 matches in the group stage of the European Championship! In four editions, Samir Nasri and Karim Benzema are the only French scorers. The attacking midfielder scored against England at Euro 2012 and the 2022 Ballon d’Or converted a penalty against Portugal in 2021.

Even at Euro 2016!

The two other French goals scored in the first period of a Euro group stage are in fact the author of opposing players: Maximilian Wöber last week during the entry into the running of the 2022 world vice-champions and Mats Hummels during France-Germany in 2021, also as part of the first day of groups.

At Euro 2016 in France, to launch the journey of the “La Dèche” team to the final (lost in overtime against Portugal), Hugo Lloris and his teammates did not score in the first period during their three group matches. Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet against Romania (2-1) like Antoine Griezmann and again Payet against Albania (2-0) all scored during the second half.
