Former Manchester City defender Danny Mills believes Mikel Arteta is the right man to replace Pep Guardiola.

Mills praised the work Arteta has done in north London, despite the Spaniard failing to win the Premier League title last season. Guardiola has hinted in recent months that next season could be his last in charge of the Premier League champions and the former full-back believes the most logical replacement is the Arsenal manager.

Speaking to BetVictor, Mills said: “Mikel Arteta is the best man to replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, without a shadow of a doubt. He has worked with Pep, he knows the way City play and he can arrive with the same level of intensity as him. I think this will be a problem. It’s like trying to replace Jurgen Klopp, Arsène Wenger or Sir Alex Ferguson.

Huge pressure

“The City hierarchy must look for a successor and I am sure they are doing so. It is a concern for City but when you look at what they have done in the past, the personalities they have brought in to run the academy and recruitment, you have to trust them and hope that there is a good succession plan.”

Mills is right when he talks about the difficulty of replacing Guardiola. He led City to four consecutive Premier League titles and won their first Champions League. Anyone who walks through the door will immediately feel the pressure. Arteta is a great manager, but he has yet to get his team over the line when they need to. Rarely criticized, Guardiola remains a world reference among coaches.
